Customs clearance

is a key stage in the process of international goods transport. This procedure applies to exported/imported goods and transporting vehicles at special customs control points of each country in the world, except for common trade links with free entry.

The entire customs clearance process consists of several important steps:

  • Inspection of the vehicle and the attached documentation for the goods by the specialists of the customs clearance point;

  • Movement of goods to a warehouse for further inspection and detection of apparent violations of international transport rules;

  • Declaration and registration of the goods;

  • Checking whether the product complies with the documentation, checking HS codes, quality certificates, detecting irregularities in the preparation;

  • Currency control and verification of payment of all required customs duties;

  • Inspection of cargo with documentary recording and registration of inspection results.

Based on all these procedures, the customs authorities decide whether or not the goods can cross the border. We recommend using a customs broker or a professional logistics agency with a full range of accompanying services to ensure that all documentation is completed correctly and each stage of the clearance process is smooth.

What documents are needed for customs clearance?

Depending on the laws and legal specifics of the country, the list of documents can be supplemented with different forms and overprints. But in general the basic documentation package consists of the following titles:

  • Customs declaration;
  • Certificates for the transported products;
  • Documents for transport and cargo insurance;
  • Payment documents, bank statements;
  • Copies or originals of certificates of quality and conformity of goods;
  • Declaration and other transport documents.

General cargo requires more careful preparation for customs clearance, as each consignment has its own direct sender and recipient, and the differing characteristics of the product require separate declarations and certificates.

Presenting knowingly false data to customs control staff can lead to administrative liability, heavy fines and even confiscation of the goods. The wider the geography of transport, the more knowledge and experience is required from a freight forwarder, therefore, you should be careful when choosing a company, and only after reviewing its activities on the web.
